What's My Skin Type?

Discovering your skin type is the first crucial step to smoother, clearer skin.  Different skin types have distinctive and sometimes opposite needs so finding the best product for your unique type is paramount.  An important note is that skin type can change depending on age, season, hormones, or medication.  It can also be influenced by air quality, health, and diet.

There are four basic skin types:

  • Dry
  • Oily
  • Combination
  • Normal

Do you know which category you fall under?  Let's talk a bit about each one, then do a test to see which type best describes you.

1. DRY SKIN

The skin naturally produces an oil called sebum which keeps skin lubricated and protected.  Dry skin is deficient in sebum production resulting in dull appearance.

2. OILY

Oily skin suffers from an overabundance of sebum which leaves skin very shiny.  The extra oils may also clog pores allowing bacteria to build up and create blemishes such as acne.

3. COMBINATION

Just what is says--the skin produces uneven amounts of sebum in patches over the face.  Some places on your face such your forehead and nose may be shiny and oily.  Simultaneously, other parts of your face such as your cheeks may be dry and dull.  Or even your skin may be oily in summer but dry in winter.

4. NORMAL

The skin produces just enough sebum to sufficiently lubricate the skin without an oily residue.  Considered "healthy" or "balanced" skin.

OTHER SKIN TYPES

Generally these are sub-categories of the above four skin types.

SENSITIVE SKIN

Skin that may be easily irritated by additives such as preservatives, colorants, fragrances, and synthetics.

MATURE SKIN

Usually fighting signs of aging such as loss of elasticity, wrinkles, changes in skin texture, etc.  Can lean more towards the dry side.

SKIN TYPE TEST

To determine your skin type, wash your face with water and wait for 2 hours without applying any other products. How does your face feel?

  • If your face feels dry and tight all over, you most likely have DRY SKIN.
  • If your face feels oily all over with really shiny spots, you most likely have OILY SKIN.
  • If your face feels oily in only certain places, you most likely have COMBINATION SKIN.
  • If you face feels not too oily, not too dry, you most likely have NORMAL SKIN.
